What is JungleDragon?
JungleDragon is a social wildlife community for fans of nature. It is our mission to facilitate the creation of the largest resource of nature imagery on the planet. We do this by offering an engaging, social and friendly way to find and contribute images and other content.
Nature for all, all for nature!
Don't we have enough photo sharing platforms already?
JungleDragon is not a general purpose photo storage service, there are better places for that. JungleDragon is focused and optimized for the topic of nature and its enthusiasts. The content, design, reputation system and feature set of JungleDragon is about nature only. JungleDragon is not just a catalog, it is a focused community that is trying to build an extensive, easy-to-use resource of nature imagery for all of mankind to enjoy. A resource where you call the shots.
Why should I sign up?
You don't have to. If you only want to view and enjoy the images, comments and other content of JungleDragon, you do not need an account. With an account, you will be able to engage in the community. You will have an identity and reputation that matches the foodchain of real nature. You will have a democratic voice and will be able to contribute, vote, comment, favorite , make friends and much more. Based on your reputation, your experience will improve.
By the way, signing up is easy. You can even reuse your Facebook or Twitter account.
What languages do you support?
JungleDragon currently only supports the english language for its user interface. For the time being, we recommend you use translation tools such as those offered by Google to translate pages. You are allowed to post text in comments and image details in any kind of language, although we prefer english for the widest community impact. We hope to offer more robust language options in the future.
How do I find interesting content?
JungleDragon offers many ways to quickly find interesting stuff based on your mood.
If you just want to explore content, the homepage is a good starting point. There you will find the most popular and recent images submitted by the community. From there it is just one click away to similar images or like minded users.
If you are looking for something specific, the Tags screen packs a lot of power. It allows for easy tag browsing and searching. You may also like photo lists, wonderful photo stories assembled by our members.
If you have an account, you can follow users who's contributions you like. From there on, anything submitted by your friends will be displayed in your friend activity stream, which you can access from your profile.
How do I sign up and manage my account?
Signing up is easy. Go to the signup page and fill out your desired username, password and email address. Or, reuse your Google, Facebook or Twitter account. When you sign up using a Google or Facebook account, there is no need for email activation. When you sign up using Twitter or a JungleDragon account, an extra step is performed to ask for your email. Next, click the activation link in the email that is sent to you. In case you do not receive the activation email within a few minutes, please check your spam folder and add JungleDragon as a trusted sender. In case you still cannot find the activation email, please contact us.
With your account in place, there are a few optional steps you can perform to further create your identity. If you want, you can provide extra information about yourself by editing your profile. Simple click your avatar to visit your profile. From there, visit the "Edit your details" link to provide extra information. All fields are optional. The better you describe yourself, the better you are able to engage in the community and make friends.
An extra optional step to further enhance your identity is to set your avatar. JungleDragon will use the avatar you may have defined at gravatar.com that is associated with the email address that you used to sign up with JungleDragon. If you have not defined an avatar image at gravatar, you will be assigned a random one. If you join JungleDragon using your Twitter account, your Twitter avatar will be used.
I lost my password or my email address changed. Now what?
If you have created your JungleDragon account from your Facebook or Twitter account, you should manage your password at those services. In case you have created a normal JungleDragon account and forgot your password, go to the Sign In screen and choose the "Recover your password" option. You will be able to reset your password after email verification. Note that you can always change your password when signed in. Visit the "Edit your details" link from your profile and then go to "Change password".
To change your email address associated with your account, visit the "Edit your details" link from your profile and then go to "Change email address". An activation email will be sent to your new email address.
I have an account. What are all these animal icons about?
JungleDragon has a unique reputation system that awards you karma points for positive behavior. Based on your karma score, you are assigned a class in the food chain. Your class acts as a badge of honour and recognition, but also gives you special powers. You can earn karma in various ways, explained here. Why don't you have a look at the foodchain overview, to see what you can be.
When you are signed in and visit your own profile, you can see the events recorded in your karma log and how much karma you are rewarded for each.
Can I have multiple accounts?
An account is associated with an email address, you can only have one account per email address. Although it is technically possible to create multiple accounts if you have multiple email addresses, we do not allow for it. It is more beneficial for both you and JungleDragon to have a one person one account policy. Note though that you can have multiple signin accounts per JungleDragon account. For example, you can associate your Twitter and/or Facebook account with your JungleDragon account. Go to your profile, choose "edit details" and then "Manage signing settings" to see which signing accounts are associated with your account.
Uploading and managing my content
How do I upload images?
When signed in, you simply visit the Upload link from the global navigation bar. If your browser supports Flash, you are able to select multiple images from your device at once and wait for the system to upload and process them. In case your browser does not support Flash, there is a classic single file uploader.
Although not required, you images will be appreciated by the community more if you also provide a description and tag it with relevant keywords.
Some users use programs like Lightroom to set EXIF, IPTC and Geotag information on their images, JungleDragon will read key elements from that embedded data to automatically title, tag and geotag your uploaded images.
Note that an upload quota is enforced on your account. The size of this quota is generous and is based on your class. This quota is in place to prevent abuse, not to hinder you.
If your image contains EXIF data, JungleDragon will parse it and show it on the image page. Images of a higher resolution will be awarded with more karma points.
What images am I allowed to upload?
You should only upload images of nature to JungleDragon:
- If you have the gear, micro organisms ;)
- Natural landscapes
- Natural events
Images typically concern photographs, but illustrations and artwork are also allowed. JungleDragon is largely community moderated, but photos that are clearly off topic will be removed. You should only upload images that you own or have permission for.
How can I view my images?
JungleDragon has powerful image viewing capabilities. From your profile, you can view the images you uploaded, voted on or favorited.
On image lists, you can choose how you want the images to be sorted. Common sort methods are by date uploaded (most recent) and most popular. Each image list also features a slideshow option for optimal fullscreen viewing.
When you click on an image in an image list, it will open the image page, containing all details and actions related to that image. The image page contains information about the image, uploader and related images. Clicking on the image itself allows you to view the image fullscreen.
How do I edit image details?
By default, you can edit the details of all images you have uploaded. With enough reputation, you can also earn the social editing capability, allowing you to edit the image details of others.
Editing image details is super easy. When you are signed in and you have edit rights for the image, you simple click the "edit details" button below the photo on the image page.
How do I delete an image?
To delete an image, you need to be signed in. Go to the image page and click the "delete image" button. You can only delete your own images. Note that deletes cannot be undone. The image history and comments will be deleted as well. You will lose any karma you have earned with the image you are deleting.
How do I set the license of my image?
By default, all the images you upload are marked as copyrighted. This is merely an indication to other users that your image may not be used outside of JungleDragon without your prior permission. Note that JungleDragon does not block users from viewing or downloading copyrighted images.
If you want, you can associate a less restrictive license to your images, such as one of the Creative Commons licenses. To edit the license of your image, you need to be signed in. Visit the image page and find the "edit license" link in the navigation bar to open the Edit License screen. On this screen, you can select your prefered license. You can even chose to set the selected license as a default for future images you upload. The less restrictive you set your license, the more karma points you will be rewarded.
Wow! Somebody edited my image details. What's going on?
This is social image editing at work. Users with enough reputation earn the right to edit the details of all images, much like a Wiki. These users are generally trying to improve the data quality and description of content. If you disagree with an edit made by such a user, simply open the History page from the image page. Next, find the image version that you would like to restore and click the Restore button.
If you find that a moderator is repeatedly vandalizing image details with poor data, be it on your images or someone else's images, you can report the user. Visit the profile of the user and chose the Report option. In the popup that appears, please select the reason for the report and optionally fill out a justification. JungleDragon administrators will take a look at your report and take action if needed.
What is a photo list and how do I create one?
A photo list is a named collection of photos assembled from JungleDragon photos. You do not have to be the owner of the photo to add it to a list. For example, you could create a list "The most stunning big cat photos", and add any photo to it. Others can vote on this list. Lists are a great way to tell a story about nature and an easy way to contribute even if you do not have photos of nature yourself.
When signed in, simply open any photo page and find the "add to list" button to add the photo to a new or existing list.
