Unidentified Gall on Oak (Quercus sp.) - Polystepha sp.? I'm not sure what kind of gall this is. Maybe a vein pocket gall or an elongate vein swelling? I read that Polystepha sp. can cause elongate vein swellings in oak leaves, but can't find any photos matching these. Dasineura sp. is another possibility.

The galls were fuzzy, elongated, and formed on the underside of oak (Quercus sp.) leaves. The upperside had longitudinal slits.
1. So tiny, amazing that you spotted it. I can imagine identification being difficult, I once read oak trees can have hundreds of different galls. Have you ever come across a good resource? Perhaps we can add some to the ID guide. Posted 6 years ago
    1. I work harder to find interesting things to photograph in the winter, and often search the forest floor for leaves with old galls :). They certainly can be difficult to ID though! I don’t have any websites that I specifically use to ID them though. Instead, I mostly use Charley Eiseman’s book, Tracks & Signs of Insects. It has a section on galls, and is a fantastic book overall. It’s my favorite guide book :). Posted 6 years ago
  2. Oh, this is definitely a toughie! Posted 5 years ago
