Roundworm Ovaries Cross-section (Female) - Ascaris lumbricoides Ascaris lumbricoides is a large roundworm that infects humans. It grows to 35 cm (14 in)!!

It causes ascariasis, which is a Neglected Tropical Disease (NTG). Worldwide, approximately 1 billion people are infected with this nematode, with infection being more prevalent in tropical areas where sanitation is poor. It infects humans via the fecal-oral route...eggs are shed in feces and then get ingested. Hygiene is crucial to preventing the spread of this disease because it is one of the most difficult pathogens in the world to kill (the eggs can survive several years!).
1. Amazing photographs, Christine! I looked up some photos of the adults, pretty intimidating! Posted 4 years ago
    1. Thank you! They are gruesome! The worms in the following photo were taken out of a 4-year old boy:

      1. Regrets for opening that! Posted 4 years ago
        1. Yep, sorry. But, what's even more horrifying is that the treatment for ascariasis costs as little as USD 0.04. Four cents.

If you consider that millions of children would require treatment and that you would only treat the worst cases, that cost would equal a couple hundred million USD. BUT, the benefits of such treatment are estimated at 60:1. That is a HUGE benefit. And, each year the cost would decrease as the benefits increase - better school attendance leading to better educated people, healthier families earning more money, better productivity, more stable economies, etc....

And yet, diseases like ascariasis are NTDs (neglected tropical diseases), even though they infect more than a billion people. They trap people in a life of disease and poverty. And, not enough of the more fortunate humans on this planet are helping to lessen the burden.

          1. Very sad indeed. Same with malaria, although I do believe some progress is being made there. Posted 4 years ago
            1. But, malaria is not an NTD. Malaria is one of the "Big 3" (AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis), which receive enormously more attention and resources than NTDs do. Progress has definitely been made with malaria, but drug resistance is becoming an issue.

              Here's WHO's list of NTDs:

''Ascaris lumbricoides'' is the "large roundworm" of humans, growing to a length of up to 35 cm. It is one of several species of ''Ascaris''. An ascarid nematode of the phylum Nematoda, it is the most common parasitic worm in humans. This organism is responsible for the disease ascariasis, a type of helminthiasis and one of the group of neglected tropical diseases. An estimated one-sixth of the human population is infected by ''A. lumbricoides'' or another roundworm. Ascariasis is prevalent worldwide,.. more
