Parasitoid Wasp - Podagrion sp. I was given a praying mantis ootheca and told that it was not viable. I kept it in a vial and a month or so after receiving it, and then I noticed that the jar was full of mantis nymphs and tiny wasps. This is one of the wasps. It was difficult to get decent photos because they are so very tiny.
I know that the ootheca was collected in the US, but I am not sure where...yet.
1. Fantastic project! Note that ootheca are often quite recognizable to genus or even species level. I don't know the first thing about American species, but someone knowledgable may be able to tell you... Also, maybe send some of the wasps in for ID - there is still a lot to be learned about this kind of relationships. Posted 4 years ago
    1. Ohh, great ideas, Arp! I am trying to find out where my friend got the ootheca from. She lives in Texas, but someone gave the ootheca to her. I posted this on BugGuide for now, but would love to get the wasps and mantises IDed further. I'm going to look into it and see if someone can do it. Thanks for the suggestion! Posted 4 years ago
