Dermocybe splendida

Cortinarius splendida

An orange to red Cortinariaceae family macrofunus found in southern parts of Australia and associated with eucalyptus.
Splendid Red Skinhead (Dermocybe splendida) After hoping to find these for a couple of years I finally found a single specimen under eucalypt trees next to a stream.
The photo doesn't do justice to the true colour which really glows vermillion all over. The top of the cap is a little darker.
Previously known as Dermocybe splendida.
About 50mm across, 65mm tall. Stipe slightly flattened near the base.
Public nature reserve.

Appearance

The whole fungus has a base colour of vermillion (orange/red) which can be very vivid in some examples.
The pileus is often darker especially towards the centre. The gills show the strongest colour.
Spores tan. Height is usually up to 70mm.
Splendid Red Skinhead ( Dermocybe splendida) These mushrooms were amazing - the red colour especially on the gill surface was stunning. The caps had a dark centre but the margins still were a vivid red. Stems were a yellowish orange and a clear red near the cap.
Found in a mixed eucalyptus and tea-tree forest . Australia,Cortinarius splendida,Dermocybe splendida,Geotagged,Winter
