Appearance

Dorsal spines (total): 10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-18; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 7 - 8. Male displays a bright red dorsal fin. Ventral fins greatly extended. Female orange with yellowish tail and a pink line from the tip of the snout angling down, passing through the lower part of the eye. Max length : 9.5 cm

Distribution

Pacific Ocean: Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to the Line Islands, north to the Yaeyama Islands, south to the Great Barrier Reef, Fiji and Samoa. Replaced by Pseudanthias ignitus in the Indian Ocean.

Orange to yellow body, lavender to pink head and bright red dorsal fin, translucent tail. the females are orange to peach in the upper head, body and fins while the lower head is pale. They have to narrow violet to lavender or yellowish bars extended from eye to pectoral fin base. Males show an erect dorsal fin during courtship. They form schools and plankton-feeding aggregations 1-3 m above the substrate (e.g.corals). Females far outnumber males.
Habitat: Upper edge of steep slopes to 15 m.

Behavior

Males show an erect dorsal fin during courtship. They form schools and plankton-feeding aggregations 1-3 m above the substrate (e.g.corals). Females far outnumber males.

Habitat

Found at the upper-edge of steep outer reef slopes, with moderate currents. Occurs in large aggregations, of mixed sexes when feeding in currents sweeping the reef. Depth range 1 - 18 m, usually 1 - 15 m. Tropical; 22°C - 28°C
