Cedros Island Horned Lizard

Phrynosoma cerroense

The Cedros Island Horned Lizard occurs on both Isla Cedros and throughout central Baja California and Baja California Sur. Because of recent taxonomic research, the species boundaries between those populations formerly recognized as the Coast Horned Lizard are not well-defined and research is needed to detail their contact zones. In Baja California, the southernmost confirmed localities are at Punta Abrejos on the Pacific coast and Santa Rosalia on the Gulf coast. The northernmost confirmed locality is at Colonia Guerrero, Baja California

Naming

The common name Cedros Island Horned Lizard is based on the type locality for this species. Subsequent restructuring of the horned lizards of California and Baja California have redefined the species such that the vast majority of its range is on the mainland.
