Yellow trout lily

Erythronium americanum

''Erythronium americanum'' is a North American species of herbaceous flowering plant in the lily family.
Trout Lily - Erythronium americanum Check out the anthers on this flower...Some have pollen and some don't.

Here's the reason: Trout lily has two sets of anthers. One set opens one day, while the other set opens the next day. This strategy prevents pollinators from collecting all the pollen from a given flower in a single day, thus giving other insects the opportunity to cross-pollinate. Brilliant!

Appearance

The common name "Trout lily" refers to the appearance of its gray-green leaves mottled with brown or gray, which allegedly resemble the coloring of brook trout.

It blooms in early spring with nodding one-inch yellow flowers, the petals and petal-like sepals recurved upward. Each plant sends up a single flower stem with a pair of leaves.
Yellow Trout Lily - Erythronium americanum A pair of brown and green mottled leaves sheath the base of the stalk, which bears a solitary, nodding flower. The flowers are yellow inside and yellow/bronze outside. The petals and sepals are bent backwards, exposing 6 brown stamens. Not all plants will flower - single-leaved, non-flowering plants also occur because they are either too young (Trout Lily doesn't flower for the first 4-7 years of life) or too crowded to flower.
