Trout Lily - Erythronium americanum Check out the anthers on this flower...Some have pollen and some don't.

Here's the reason: Trout lily has two sets of anthers. One set opens one day, while the other set opens the next day. This strategy prevents pollinators from collecting all the pollen from a given flower in a single day, thus giving other insects the opportunity to cross-pollinate. Brilliant!
1. That is an astonishing fact! Is this the only flower that has this strategy? Posted 5 years ago
    1. I'm not really sure. A naturalist told me about this species, but it would make sense for there to be other flowers that do this as well. It is a great strategy. Posted 5 years ago
      1. I will use this to my advantage...

"why are you half-assing this task?"
