Canarian Chaffinch

Fringilla coelebs canariensis

Fringilla coelebs canariensis is a subspecies of chaffinch found on Gran Canaria. It is a part of group of subspecies found on the Canary Islands that look significantly different from birds on mainland Europe, which has led some authors to suggest that they should be split off into a separate species. However, as birds from Madeira and North Africa are intermediate in appearance between these two extremes, more work is still required to fully elucidate their taxonomy.
