It is a stingless bee of the family Apidae.

Appearance

The bees are predominantly orange, but the apex of the head and the mesoscutum are black. The second metasomal tergite is also darker, and so contrasts with the remaining tergites. The body is about 5 mm long.

Distribution

Mexico to Panamá.

Behavior

Nests are constructed in tree cavities. The entrance is a simple cylindrical tube, a few centimetres long and
about 2 cm in diameter. They deposit pheromone marks at food sources and in the vegetation on their way back to the nest to communicate the exact location of valuable food sources.

Habitat

Tropical forest.
