Northern Australian Snakeneck Turtle
Chelodina rugosa
Chelodina rugosa is a snake-necked turtle turtles from the family (Chelidae). The species previously belonged to the genus Macrochelodina, and before that was the species to the genus Chelodina counted, so that the scientific naming is sometimes confusing. The species was first scientifically described by William Ogilby in 1890.
The turtle is a larger species and reaches a maximum length of 35 inches. The color is dark brown to black. The head and legs are brown to gray in color. Under the heading is a number of barbels present, in other turtles there are always two, but in this species the number is variable.
Chelodina rugosa is endemic to Australia. The turtle is spreading across the country. The habitat consists of larger rivers and marshes and other waters.
