Olive Forest Racer

Dendrophidion dendrophis

Dendrophidion dendrophis is a diurnal colubrid known from Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and French Guiana. The long slender body lead some researchers to conclude that it is an arboreal species, but observations of active individuals strongly indicate that it is primarily terrestrial.
Olive Forest Racer (Dendrophidion dendrophis) posing by a log This species looks like a long thin arboreal snake, and this individual was indeed found at night sleeping in vegetation. But active individuals are usually (always?) found on the ground, so it seems to be a long thin terrestrial snake instead. This one was detained overnight and then released where it had been found. Naming

The latin name means "tree-loving tree snake", which is rather ironic since it is now understood that the species is primarily terrestrial.
