Marsh snipefly

Rhagio tringarius

''Rhagio tringarius'', common name marsh snipefly, is a species of fly from the family Rhagionidae.
Marsh snipefly, Heesch, Netherlands It took me a while to understand this is not a robber fly. The build of the insect suggests it, yet it's a snipe fly instead. The main way to tell is the lack of bristles on the chest, thorax and legs. You can see that they're smooth on the side view photo.

By far the most reported snipefly here is Rhagio scolopaceus, which looks very close, yet has on clear difference: it has black marks on the wings, whilst this species has clear wings.

Appearance

''Rhagio tringarius'' can reach a length of 8–14 millimetres. The abdomen and the long slender legs are yellow-orange. The patterning on the abdomen is quite variable, but usually it shows black well spaced dorsal triangles. Also the last abdomen tergites are black.
