Aurora Damsel

Chromagrion conditum

The Aurora Damsel is the only member of its genus. The males are blue on segments 8 and 9 of the abdomen, while on the females those segments are brown and black. Both sexes have yellow on the sides of the thorax.
Emerging Damselfy - Chromagrion conditum Another damsel in the process of becoming an adult. It was so tempting to pull the exuvia off the adult and 'help' it out. But, ecdysis is an important process and its best to let the insect do the work.

Habitat: Small wooden footbridge in a wetland. This bridge had a bunch of damselflies in different stages of emergence.

Appearance

The male thorax is black dorsally and blue laterally with a small yellow patch on the lower part of the thorax. The abdomen is long and thin, mostly black with blue rings on segments 3 - 7, and blue with a pattern of black markings dorsally on segments 8 and 9. The wings are clear and the eyes are blue with no post-ocular spots. Females resemble the males, but are light brown where the male is blue. Females also show the lateral yellow thoracic patch.
Emerging Damselfy - Chromagrion conditum The adult damselfly had just finished emerging from its nymphal stage. The exuvia is right below the adult. Its wings hadn't extended yet and were so awesome-looking.

Behavior

This damselfly can be seen perched for fairly long periods of time on low vegetation around shorelines. It often perches like a spreadwing with its wings held partially separated.
Emerging Damselfy - Chromagrion conditum The adult damselfly was just starting to emerge from its nymph stage (look at the thorax - the yellowish bit is the adult coming out).
