Chrysomelidae larvae, Heesch, Netherlands On my recent hike, I spotted some aphids on a leaf. A classic scene and I figured it to be a cool subject for extreme macro, so I took the leaf with subjects included and brought it home.

Only when previewing at large magnification on a big monitor did I realize the black dots were not aphids at all. I think they are the larvae of a Chrysomelidae beetle.

Viewing 50 or so of these wildly chaotic and nervous larvae on a giant screen came as a bit of a surprise, if not a shock. Rather than sacrificing and stacking them, I only took single 2.5x macro shots, and then released them into a corner of the garden.
1. Very cool scene! Maybe they will stay in your yard and you'll spot the adults soon. Posted 5 years ago
    1. I hope so! This was 3 weeks ago though, haven't seen anything yet. Perhaps ended up as bird food :) Posted 5 years ago
      1. Either way, they are part of the food web now. Posted 5 years ago
