  1. How sure are you of this species name? Agriotes sputator is described as mostly occurring in Europe, Northern Africa and Western Asia. It is not described as occurring in Southeast Asia. I do agree that it looks visually similar to Agriotes sputator. Posted 5 years ago

      this look same

      1. I agree it looks the same, but this does not mean the species is correct. Here's why:

        1. You did not take into account distribution (location). The species you suggest seems to be a US species only:
        http://v3.boldsystems.org/index.php/Taxbrowser_Taxonpage?taxid=489543

So this makes it extremely unlikely that the one you saw in Malaysia is the same species. Therefore, always check distribution/location.

        2. "Looks the same" is not always enough, especially not for insects. Sometimes dozens of species in a genus look very similar. Sorry, insect identification can be quite hard. I have no solution for it.

I'm no expert either, but you can get better at identification if you keep practicing. To begin, at least ensure that you always take into account the "look" and the location. Furthermore, here's a useful list of links that may help in identification:

In some cases, it will simply not be possible to find the species from the photo alone. For example, perhaps you will only know the family and genus. That's fine, the important part is that you try your best and get better at it over time. I don't have an easier answer :)

The upside: you will learn a lot about nature!
