Small green frog - belly shot, La Isla Escondida, Colombia Opening our 5th and final full day in La Isla Escondida. After 4 action packed intense days, we took things a bit slower on this day, but there&#039;s still plenty to report on.         Just curious - when you capture frogs, do you touch them? Or, do you use leaves/sticks, etc.? Posted 6 years ago

          On this trip almost all were captured by our guides, who do touch them. Except for poison frogs, then they use gloves. Posted 6 years ago

            Makes sense since they must be aware of which species are safe to handle. I saw a picture once of a guy holding a poisonous frog, which had the toxins in its skin. I was surprised, but he said that it was safe as long as the frog didn't get stressed. I'm guessing that the frog he was holding must have only been mildly toxic or safe to handle under certain conditions, etc. But, honestly, I wouldn't have touched it. Posted 6 years ago

              Well, to be fair I've seen many cases of poison frogs being handled without gloves, more like a 50/50 thing. In the few dozen times I've seen it, I didn't come across as a very dangerous process, but I wouldn't take that as advise.

              Also consider the opposite danger: what we have on our hands (bug spray, sun cream) may be very dangerous to a frog's sensitive skin.               Posted 6 years ago

                Good point! They are such sensitive creatures. I never wear lotion or bug spray on my hands when hiking for that reason - I like to touch creatures that seem relaxed enough to be handled briefly. Posted 6 years ago
