Spring peeper (Pseudacris crucifer) I *thought* this guy is the new record for the smallest American Toad I&#039;ve seen so far... but I was wrong! It&#039;s a Spring Peeper (which explains the tiny size a lot more)!<br />

  1. Really cool how you documented this one, Joe. Can't say for American toads, but for most toads indeed I think they would be this small in spring, not in september. Posted 10 years ago
  2. Are we sure this is an American Toad? just looks a little off to be one. Posted 10 years ago
    1. A mis-identification! Ack! It's a Spring Peeper!
I've seen so many young American Toads this year, I just kind of assumed without looking closely. I saw the familiar behavior, and the X pattern on the back... didn't even think twice about the pattern being smooth and fully connected instead of several distinct spots.

The spring peeper is a small chorus frog widespread throughout the eastern United States and Canada. They are so called because of their chirping call that marks the beginning of spring.
