
Shortneedle Conifer Scale - Dynaspidiotus tsugae
This one had a hole in it. I'm not sure why -- maybe from the crawlers (first instar nymphs) escaping?
I found these scales on eastern hemlock needles that were infested with hemlock woolly adelgids.
Habitat: Mixed forest
Check out the tiny nymph in this video. I assume it's a scale nymph (crawler):
