Appearance

This is an annual plant which grows in clumps or mounds in the sand on beaches and bluffs. The shiny leaves are fleshy, green and tinted with purple or magenta, and long-lobed. It has white to light purple flowers and sculpted, segmented, corky brown fruits one to three centimeters long. The fruits float and are water-dispersed.
Seed Pod of the European Sea Rocket The seed pod of the Cakile maritima has two parts. The distal three quarters easily fractures from the medial quarter when ripe. The fractured portion is “corky” and contains two seeds. This portion is capable of floating on the ocean for up to 70 days therefore allowing the plant to spread to another beach. To ensure that this plant can also stay where it is the medial portion also contains two seeds which end up in the sand surrounding this annual plant ensuring a new plant next spring.
