Seed Pod of the European Sea Rocket
The seed pod of the Cakile maritima has two parts. The distal three quarters easily fractures from the medial quarter when ripe. The fractured portion is “corky” and contains two seeds. This portion is capable of floating on the ocean for up to 70 days therefore allowing the plant to spread to another beach. To ensure that this plant can also stay where it is the medial portion also contains two seeds which end up in the sand surrounding this annual plant ensuring a new plant next spring.
