Sandalodes superbus (Sandalodes superbus)

Ludicra Jumping Spider - male (Sandalodes suberbus) Described as the largest and most robust of its species, this very dark jumping spider was about 13 mm long. Fangs were large and above dark eyes was a furry brow. Palps were dark and long. Front legs were long and had faint white banding like the other legs. The abdomen had a thin white line along the anterior margin and a flattened "x" pattern in white. two pairs of white specks were seen in front of and posterior to the X mark.
This species can deliver a painful bite (with no serious after-effects) and is capable of spanning a 30 cm gap in one jump.

Appearance

The male body is about 13mm and the female about 11mm. The male is mostly black or very dark reddish brown with some white markings and spots on the abdomen. The female is often paler coloured and has a thick white dorsal strip on the abdomen. Considerable variability exists in both sexes.
