Iberian Sooty Copper

Lycaena bleusei

This species is restricted to Spain and Portugal, where it is found in several mountain ranges in central Spain and in the Portuguese Alentejo. Field work is needed to find new populations in suitable areas. This is a European and Mediterranean endemic species.

Habitat

The habitat consists of grassland clearings in open Quercus ilex and Q. pyrenaica woodlands, but also in traditionally grazed grasslands and open areas in pine forests. The species has two generations and hibernates as a larva in the second generation. The larva feeds on several Rumex species.
