Fendler's waterleaf

Hydrophyllum fendleri

Erect plant with spreading leaves. Stems have rigid hairs. Leaves longer than wide, oblong to oval, 2–12 in. long, divided pinnately to 9- to 13-lobed leaflets with stiff hairs on both sides. Inflorescence consists of dense clusters atop stalks under upper leaves. White to purple flowers are bells with long hairs on outside, 5 stamens extending beyond. Grows in moist open areas, woods with underbrush, to subalpine. Var. albifrons leaflets have long, tapered sharply pointed tips and 4–8 teeth on each side.
