The American Dagger Moth is a moth of the family Noctuidae. It is native to North America.
American Dagger Moth caterpillar (Acronicta americana) This lemon yellow caterpillar isn't hard to spot on the bark of a tree but when on the ground with the colorful leaves of autumn, it's camouflage is very effective. Because it appears to be cute and fuzzy, people want to touch it. Not a good idea....although it doesn't have the ability to sting, the hollow hairs, when touched, break off and secrete a poison that can cause a severe allergic reaction. Behavior

The young caterpillar is densely covered with yellow setae. The older caterpillar's setae are either pale yellow or white. All instars have thin, black setae on the first and third abdominal segments. On the eighth abdominal segment, there is one tuft of black setae. The caterpillar will reach a length 50 mm . Caution should be taken in handling the caterpillar, as the hollow setae may break off in to human skin, releasing a toxin which can produce a rash.
