Vitisiella brevicauda

Vitisiella brevicauda is a species of gall midge (gall gnat) of the Cecydomyiidae family. Globular, irregular, usually red swellings on leaf, tendril, or flower. This is the most commonly reared species from these galls. Galls sometimes cover so much surface that leaves and flower parts are deformed.

Appearance

The host plant is Vitis riparia Michx, with common names riverbank grape or frost grape, is a vine indigenous to North America. From the galls, tiny orange, about 2.5 mm larvae emerge and drop to the ground, where they burrow to pupate. The adult gnat also has an orange-colored body with darker stripes.
