Appearance

Males with large distinct scales on body, red-brown to olive green on sides, blue-green on back and upper tail base, head purplish with oblique blue-green stripes, one through eye and another broader one on cheek, and eye red. Females/initial phase red-brown with a large yellow patch on upper tail base and red fins. Max Size: 35 cm

Distribution

Southwestern Atlantic: Brazil and its oceanic islands, St. Paul's Rocks and at the oceanic islands of Fernando de Noronha, Atol das Rocas and Trindade. Eastern Central Atlantic: Cape Verde.

Habitat

Tropical reef-associated; depth range 5 - 80 m.
