Appearance

Pale to dark purple thin, brittle, leafy calcified fronds, attached at base, margins free, lobed. Fronds semicircular, concentrically banded (above). Reproduction takes place in winter and spring in small, wart-like conceptacles on the surface, persisting. Calcareous, thin brittle fronds with concentric markings.

Distribution

European coasts of Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.

Habitat

Epilithic, mixed with other Corallinaceae (ex.: Lithothamnion philipii) or on pebbles, epiphytic on Posidonia rhizomes, but also under Laminariales; more frequently recorded in shaded sites with bottom energy.
