Appearance

Appearance of a cockchafer like Amphimallon solstitialis but smaller: length 13 to 15 mm, not hairy. Brilliant colors vary from brown to green. Striated elytra. Claws bifid.

Distribution

A widespread and generally common lowland species occurring throughout Europe from France to the UK and southern Fennoscandia in the north and the northern Mediterranean to the south although it is absent from the southern-most extremes, and extending through Russia into Siberia to the east.

Behavior

Fast flight in hot weather.

Habitat

Likes sandy soils where it burrows shallow to lay eggs.
