Appearance

It is completely black, with a large head, which seems smaller due to the width of the pronotum that expands laterally forming a shield with pointed ends, which is what indicates the genus of its scientific name.
The globular abdomen has a slightly pronounced longitudinal keel, formed by the fusion zone of the elytra. In this way, these beetles cannot fly -they do not have developed membranous wings either-, and they move by walking somewhat clumsily, with slow and unbalanced steps.

Distribution

Mediterranean area, both in Europe and Africa.

Habitat

This beetle is common in dry land.

Food

They feed on decomposing organic matter.
