Appearance

The upright stem, up to 1 meter high, is leafy with numerous consecutive lanceolate leaves, and at the top, it bears one, more often 2-3 (even up to 5) golden-yellow large flowers. The perianth petals are strongly curved backward and are sprinkled with brown spots on the inside. The heavy brick-red anther bags hang on long handles, with a three-part orange lollipop between them. The stem is very tough and when it tries to break off, it is pulled out next to the bulb itself, so it is doomed to die.

It has a strong and unpleasant odor that attracts pollinators.

Mountain lily, Fairy tulip, Yanka's lily

Distribution

This lily is named after the Hungarian botanist Viktor Janka von Bulcs, who greatly contributed to the study of the Balkan flora. Janka’s lily is found in the high mountains of the Balkan Peninsula and Romania, relatively isolated, in mountains above 1500 masl.

Habitat

Yellow mountain lily grows on grassy places, rocky meadows, and silicate and calcareous terrain. It blooms from June - to July. It is threatened by mowing the meadows, grazing cattle, and destruction by tourists. The species is a Balkan endemic, a protected species, and is included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. It has a fascinating shape and gives a gentle look and harmony.
