Naming

Originally described as Emphytus carpini by Hartig in 1837. Later it was classified as Protemphytus carpini, and now as Ametastegia (Protemphytus) carpini, due to Protemphytus now being interpreted as a subgenus of Ametastegia.

The larvae are documented feeding on various species of Geranium (Geranium pratense, sylvaticum, sanguineum and robertianum)
