Poecilium alni (Linnaeus, 1767) is a relatively small (4-7mm) Longhorn beetle (family Cerambycidae) known from large parts of the Palaearctic region.

Appearance

On closer observation this small beetle is quite colourful, with the basal third of the elytra reddish brown and the hind two thirds darker with conspicuous white stripes. It looks superficially similar to Anaglypticus mysticus , but that species is larger, the elytra not so dark apically and the white stripes are placed differently.

Naming

The genus Poecilium was classified as a subgenus of Phymatodes for a long time, hence in older references this beetle will appear as Phymatodes (Poecilium) alni, or simply Phymatodes alni
