Two subspecies are recognized:
⤷  ''P. n. nigricans'' : Found in south-eastern DR Congo, north-western Zambia and south-western Tanzania
⤷  ''P. n. occidentis'' Clancey, 1968: Found in south-western DR Congo and northern Angola
