Mutusca brevicornis

Mutusca brevicornis

Mutusca brevicornis is a true bug in the family Alydidae (family denominator "Broad headed bugs", which doesn't quite fit this species), native to Australasiae. Colloquially it is often referred to as "Grass bug" or "Brown grass bug" but as there are many other bugs occuring on grasses that are also referred to as such, this is not a discriminative name.

Appearance

This is a very slender bug (good shape for hiding in grasses), that can be confused with some slender shaped Mirids ("Plant bugs"; Mitridae) and the likes of genus Leptocorisa (also Alydidae). Mirids don't have the ocelli that are present on both slender genera of Alydidae and Leptocorisa can be set off from Mutusca by having the first antennal segment swollen only apically, not over its entire length as in Mutusca.
