Dicyrtomina saundersi

Dicyrtomina saundersi

Dicyrtomina saundersi is one of the small "globular" Springtails (Collembola) from the family Dicyrtomidae. Within its distribution range it is easily found in leaf litter from late fall to early spring. It can be confused with other species of Dicyrtomina, most notably with D. ornata.

This is a magnification somewhere between 4:1 and 5:1, and then significantly cropped. Note the sudden color shift midway the antennae, which is a key for Dicyrtomina saundersi.

Check out the photo bomber, upside down on its back. I think it's a mite. If the springtail is somewhere around 1-1.5mm, it must be in the 0.1mm domain. Dicyrtomina saundersi,Extreme Macro

Appearance

Dicyrtomina saundersi is very variable in the extent of the red/purple-ish colour markings, ranging from almost entirely yellow to almost entirely dark. On most specimen (except for the extremes of the colour range) the shape of the dorsal spot/bar at the end of the abdomen is quite diagnostic with clearly defined cross bars (which D. ornata doesn't have as such) as well as the antennae with an abrupt colour change about half way (D. ornata more uniformly toned antennae). The eye-patches are all black on both species.
