Appearance

Thorax with posterior tuft. Fore wing smooth; termen straight; 12 veins, all separate; 8 and 9 separate; upper internal vein of cell from between 10-11; 3, 4, and 5 not approximate at termen; 2 from cell beyond 3/4, straight. Hind wing with 8 veins; 6 and 7 approximate toward base; 3 and 4 connate; 5 approximate to 4; termen concave below apex; in male a chitinous ridge on inner margin. Hind tibia of male with yellow hair pencile.

Distribution

Heinrich (1926) reported the range to include Iowa, Illinois, east to Maine, south to Virginia, Kentucky. Moth Photographers Group includes Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec in Canada and in the US includes California and Indiana but not Iowa, Kentucky, or Virginia. Bug Guide includes New Brunswick and Nova scotia in Canada and in the US includes Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

Food

Heinrich (1926) reported the larvae feed on flower heads of steeplehead (Spiraea tormentosa) and goldenrod (Solidago).
