I am very happy with this butterfly, one of our best blues, described as a new species for science from Bulgaria. Alas, now in Europe there is an opinion that this is only a subspecies of the alpine P. eros. This opinion, according to Zdravko Kolev, a leading researcher of butterflies in Bulgaria, MSc in ecological zoology and environmental sciences (University of Helsinki, Finland, 2008), is not very well-argued, so I leave the identification under that name. Appearance

Identification & Similar species: A shining blue, it is of a deeper tone than the nominate subspecies. It also has broader black borders on the upper side. Superficially similar to the common blue, P. icarus, but the shade of blue and broad black borders are distinctive. The underside forewing frequently has a cell spot which is not always featured in the guide books.

erotides Styr. , from the mountains of Southern Siberia, is a large, blue-green male form, with broad black distal margin to the forewing, into which the deep black veins merge.

Behavior

The larva feeds on Fabaceae.
