Low, scapose, herbaceous perennial from a taproot and a few slender rhizomes
Leaves:
Leaf blades oblanceolate to ovate, up to 7 cm. long and 2 cm. wide, equaling the petiole, usually glabrous except for the hairy margins.
Flowers:
Peduncles single-flowered, 1-5, shorter than the leaves; calyx cleft to near the base; corolla white with purple veining, saucer-shaped, 1.5-3 cm. wide, the 5 glabrous lobes 2-4 times as long as the internally-hairy tube; stamens 5, the filaments attached alternate with the lobes; style 2-parted.
Fruits:
Capsule 1-celled, many-seeded.
