''Caloplaca ignea'' is a brilliant red-orange crustose areolate lichen found in the southwestern United States.:241 It has narrow to linear lobes radiating from its center , being paler in color at the outer edge.:241 It is in the ''Caloplaca'' genus of the Teloschistaceae family.:241 It has small .3 – 1 mm apothecia discs.:241 In the foothills of the western United States Sierra Nevada it grows with brilliant yellow ''Acarospora socialis'' to add spectacular color to the scenery.:3
