Staghorn fern

Platycerium superbum

''Platycerium superbum'', commonly known as the staghorn fern, is a ''Platycerium'' species of fern. It is native to Australia.
Staghorn fern Platycerium is a genus of about 18 species of ferns, four of which occur here in eastern Australia.

Staghorns are generally epiphytic (growing on trees), or occasionally lithophytic (growing on rocks). These ferns have broad nest fronds, or sterile fronds which grow and embrace the host and form a humus-collecting bowl, which can reach impressive dimensions of 1 metre or more across. Distribution

The fern is native to north-east New South Wales and Queensland. It can also be found in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. In propagated form, the plant is grown successfully as far south as Victoria.

During the 1990s, the fern was also discovered on the Hawaiian Islands where they are now considered a "problem species".
