Callirhytis lanata is a gall wasp that forms galls on trees in the red oak (Quercus rubra) group.

Appearance

This wasp forms woolly, detachable galls on leaves of various species of red oak. The galls drop in October and adults may emerge in the second, third, or fourth spring.

Galls consists of woolly cells, usually clustered in bunches with other woolly oak galls. Sizes range from 0.6 - 1.5 cm in diameter.
