Paraspirobolus lucifugus

Paraspirobolus lucifugus

Paraspirobolus lucifugus is a small cylindrical millipede (Diplopoda) in the order Spirobolida and family Spirobolellidae.
Paraspirobolus lucifugus Just because Ferdy was hinting that we're still missing millipedes :o) ...
This is another new order/family for JD (Spirobolida: Spirobolellidae). These critters look a lot like the Julida we normally have in Europe but they have completely different mouthparts and relatively short legs and antennae. There are no natural living species of this order in Europe, so this one was also found in the tropical hothouse Burgers' Bush in Arnhem (2009) Diplopoda,Paraspirobolus,Paraspirobolus lucifugus,Spirobolellidae,Spirobolida

Appearance

Millipedes of the order Spirobolida superficially look a lot like the Julida, but have clearly different morphological traits in the structure of the head (gnathochilarium) and male gonopods.

Distribution

Paraspirobolus lucifugus is a common guest in tropical glasshouses across Europe but the native range of the family Spirobolellidae includes the tropical regions of northern South America, Mexico, the Seychelles, Mauritius, Indonesia and eastern Australia. For this particular species its native range and habitat are not known, but some authors presume it to be somewhere around the Seychelles.
