Oulema obscura

Oulema obscura

Oulema obscura (Stephens, 1831) is a small Leaf Beetle (Chrysomelidae) in the subfamily Criocerinae. Like other Oulema spp. it feeds mostly on grasses and cereals.
Oulema obscura - Development Top row: This little larva had just shortly before shed its skin with poo-camouflage (top left) and was beginning to build up a new camouflage slime layer with excrements.
Bottom row: Before pupating, it sheds its slimy skin with excrements one last time and spins a somewhat sponge-like cocoon. About two weeks later the beetle emerges.

Naming

Oulema obscura (Stephens) and the also completely blue Lema cyanella (Linnaeus) have a confusing naming history. In the British keys by Joy Oulema obscura is featured misnamed as Lema cyanella, whereas the true Lema cyanella is sported as Lema puncticollis Curtis.
