Straightstick pipefish

Trachyrhamphus longirostris

A plain or mottled brown to greyish pipefish, often with pale scribbly markings on the head and a series of fine pale diamond-shaped markings on the sides. This large pipefish lies motionless on the bottom, lifting its head slightly to feed on small crustaceans.

Max 40 cm. long. Dorsal soft rays (total): 26-30; Anal soft rays: 4. Distinguished by the lack of appendages on the trunk in the juveniles, head at no angle to the body, and color patterns.
Found on the continental shelf. Enters sheltered muddy estuaries where laying out in the open on the bottom. Most specimens from dredge and trawl collections. Ovoviviparous. The male carries the eggs in a brood pouch which is found under the tail (Ref. 205). Solitary on mud bottoms.
