CAP up to 10.5 cm, fleshy, medium violet at center, grayish purple at edge, viscid drying pruinose, margin grooved, cuticle peeling; flesh white, soft. ODOR none. TASTE acrid. GILLS white becoming pale ecru. STEM white. SPORE PRINT light yellow. HABITAT Douglas-fir, sometimes pine. REMARKS The type locality for this species is Seattle, and Burlingham notes that is abundant in this area in October. Stuntz erroneously described it as mild tasting in his revision of McKenny (1971), and the error has been copied by other authors.
