Appearance

This is a rather large species (forewing length 14-22mm) with many black cross veins in the wing and a pattern of black dots on the head that is quite variable, with up to seven spots of which many can be missing.

Just noted that this may actually well be Ch. gibeauxi - recently resurrected from synonymy with pallens ... will check with Pierre Tillier on that next ...

Naming

Due to the variability in the head markings it has been described under different names as a "new" species at least some seven times. The name that historically stuck longest was Chrysopa septempunctata (Wesmael, 1841), but it was later demonstrated that Hemerobius pallens Rambur, 1838 was the same species and has seniority over septempunctata.
