General: Semi-parasitic, hairy annual, the stem 5-20 cm. tall, often well-branched.
Leaves: Leaves all cauline, mostly opposite, often alternate above, ovate to broadly elliptic, deeply toothed.
Flowers: Inflorescence a leafy-bracteate, terminal spike, the bracts broad and toothed; flowers white, often violet-tinged or with purple veins or a yellow spot; calyx deeply 4-cleft; corolla bi-labiate, the upper lip shallowly 2-lobed, the lower lip deeply 3-lobed, the lobes slightly notched; stamens 4; stigma entire.
