Phyllosticta kalmicola is a common, yet significant plant pathogen in the family Botryosphaeriaceae.
Leaf Spot - Phyllosticta kalmicola Leaf spot is caused by the fungus Phyllosticta kalmicola.  It is characterized by irregular, silvery spots with reddish borders. The black specks are the fruiting bodies (pycnidia) of the fungus.  All the mountain laurels (Kalmia latifolia) that I passed while hiking were afflicted by this fungus.

Appearance

Leaf spot is characterized by round to irregular-shaped silvery spots that are up to 5 mm in diameter. They have reddish to purple borders. The black specks are the fruiting bodies (pycnidia) of the fungus, and form in the centers of older spots. Leaf spot is most severe under crowded, shaded, and excessively moist conditions.
